“Boutique” is the most abused word in Bali hotel marketing: 200-room resorts use it, so do three-room homestays. Our rule for this list is simple — under about 60 keys, a point of view in the design, and a reason to stay there rather than anywhere else. We deliberately spread the picks across the island, from Seminyak’s villa lanes to the black-sand east coast and the coffee hills of the north, and we kept the ones we already cover in our Ubud and Canggu guides off this page.

Bali does the private-pool villa better than anywhere else in Asia.

South and west coast

The Elysian Boutique Villa Hotel

Seminyak · 26 villas · from ~US$116 · guest score 8.9

Twenty-five one-bedroom villas and a single two-bedroom, each with its own pool and king bed, arranged around a long lap pool with cabanas and a poolside restaurant. It is eight minutes on foot from the beach and a short walk from the Seminyak strip, which is the whole proposition: a private, quiet base with the restaurants within reach.

Why we like it: every villa has a pool; breakfast, afternoon tea and a Seminyak shuttle are included.
Worth knowing: not on the beach, no gym, and the frosted-glass bathroom walls are less private than you might want.

La Réserve 1785 Canggu

Canggu (adults only) · 13 suites · from ~US$424 · One MICHELIN Key 2026

A former private house turned French-accented hideaway, with high ceilings, pavilion suites with private pools, an outdoor pool, spa, yoga and a French-Asian restaurant called Le Café Rouge. New on the 2026 MICHELIN Key list and the most grown-up address in a town that mostly isn’t.

Why we like it: genuinely small, design with a sense of humour, close to the surf without the hostel crowd.
Worth knowing: over-17s only; a scooter is the practical way around; airport transfers are charged.

Uluwatu Surf Villas

Uluwatu (Suluban clifftop) · ~34 villas, 1–5 bedrooms · rates on request · Google 4.6/5 from 966 reviews

Reclaimed-teak villas with private saltwater pools on the cliff above Uluwatu’s famous left, with a private staircase down to the wave, complimentary boards, a skatepark, daily jungle yoga and a sunset restaurant. It is a surf resort first and a boutique hotel second, which is exactly why surfers love it.

Why we like it: the location is unrepeatable, and the multi-bedroom villas suit groups and retreats.
Worth knowing: no public pricing — you book direct — and the Bukit’s traffic can stretch the airport drive to 90 minutes.

Uluwatu: the villas sit directly above the break.

Kayumanis Jimbaran Private Estate & Spa

Jimbaran · 20 villas · from ~US$330 · guest score 9.2

Private-pool villas with butlers, three minutes on foot from Jimbaran’s seafood beach and about fifteen from the airport — the easiest luxury arrival on the island. There is a full spa, a seafood restaurant with private dining and, unusually for a villa estate, a real welcome for children.

Why we like it: privacy plus proximity: nothing else this close to the airport feels this far from it.
Worth knowing: open-air bathrooms mean insects and lizards; not directly on the sand; no gym.

Ubud and the hills

Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape

Payangan, north of Ubud (adults only) · 16 balés · from ~US$938 · Two MICHELIN Keys

The “no walls, no doors” hotel: sixteen open-air balés with private pools scattered along jungle paths an hour north of Ubud, a restaurant that sources most ingredients within an hour’s drive, and breakfast, activities and Ubud transfers included. It is the most radical hotel in Bali and, for the right couple, the best.

Why we like it: total privacy, serious food, and a sense of place nothing walled can match.
Worth knowing: insects come with the concept; rocky paths rule it out for anyone with mobility issues; enhancement works are scheduled from November 2026 to early March 2027, so ask before booking those dates.

Villa in the jungle near Ubud, Bali
The Ubud hills: jungle, river valleys and the best spas on the island.

Chapung Sebali

Sebali, Ubud · 22 rooms · from ~US$154 · guest score 9.8 · One MICHELIN Key

Scandinavian-modern villas on a hillside north of Ubud, run by Denmark’s Guldsmeden group. The draw is the infinity pool with its Jungle Fish bar hanging over the valley, plus a speakeasy, a spa, a gym and a free shuttle into town. For the price it is one of the best-value design hotels in Asia.

Why we like it: the view, the pool and the rate.
Worth knowing: day guests can use the main pool, which gets busy; one or two reviews grumble about mattresses.

Wapa di Ume Sidemen

Sidemen · 21 rooms · from ~US$257 · guest score 9.8

Three hundred and sixty degrees of rice terraces under Mount Agung, an infinity pool with floating breakfasts, a riverside yoga pavilion, a spa, bicycles and a shuttle — in a valley that feels like Ubud did a generation ago.

Why we like it: the setting; the near-perfect guest score.
Worth knowing: cooked breakfast and airport transfers cost extra; no TVs; guests stay on site for Nyepi.

Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort

Munduk · 37 rooms · from ~US$155 · guest score 9.8

A working coffee plantation in the cool northern hills with the single most photographed infinity pool in Bali, villas with private pools or hot tubs, a spa, two restaurants and the Munduk waterfalls and twin-lakes viewpoint a few kilometres away.

Why we like it: the pool, the climate, the price.
Worth knowing: décor is dated in places; minimum age 15; a long drive from the airport — pair it with Sidemen or Amed rather than the south.

East coast

The Griya Villas and Spa

Amed · 25 villas · from ~US$150 · guest score 9.2

Every villa has its own infinity pool facing the sea on the volcanic east coast, with two restaurants, a rooftop bar, Lipah Bay two minutes away and the USAT Liberty wreck at Tulamben twenty minutes up the road. On this coast the price buys a villa that would cost three times as much in Canggu.

Why we like it: private pools at a mid-range rate; diving on the doorstep.
Worth knowing: reviews agree it is not a true five-star — expect dated fixtures and uneven service; one villa involves a long, steep walkway.

Tandjung Sari

Sanur · around 30 bungalows · from ~US$221 · guest score 9.6

Bali’s original boutique hotel, opened in 1962 and still run by the same family: carved doors, coral walls, thatched roofs, a private beach on Sanur’s calm lagoon and a restaurant that has been written about since the 1970s. Guests have included half the rock aristocracy of the last fifty years.

Why we like it: heritage you can’t fake, and a sea you can actually swim in.
Worth knowing: neighbouring construction has bothered recent guests; check the pool-area renovation status before you book.

Honourable mentions

Lost Lindenberg (Pekutatan, west Bali) — eight rooms on stilts in the jungle behind Medewi’s surf beach, One MICHELIN Key, from about US$381; a long drive but a genuine one-off. The Ungasan Clifftop Resort (Uluwatu) — four suites and fifteen large villas, from US$550, better for weddings and groups than couples. Suarga Padang Padang — our area pick for Uluwatu in the Bali areas guide, but at 36–57 rooms depending on how you count it is on the large side for this list.

Practical notes

Getting there: from Ngurah Rai airport, allow 15 minutes to Jimbaran, 45 to Seminyak or Uluwatu, about an hour to Canggu, 90 minutes to Ubud and Sidemen, two and a half hours to Munduk and three to Amed — and up to double those at the 4–8 pm rush. Tourist levy: IDR 150,000 per international visitor, paid once per trip on the Love Bali app or at the airport. When to go: April to October is dry; June, July and late December are the crowded, expensive weeks; the hill hotels are coolest and wettest from November to March.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a boutique hotel in Bali?

There is no official definition. We use fewer than about 60 rooms, a distinct design identity and independent or small-group ownership. Big resorts calling a wing “boutique” don’t qualify.

Which area is best for a boutique stay?

Seminyak and Canggu for a social trip, Uluwatu for surf and cliffs, Ubud and Sidemen for jungle and rice fields, Amed for diving, Sanur for a calm sea. Our area guide compares them all.

Are these hotels on Booking.com?

Most are; a few (Uluwatu Surf Villas, Buahan) book direct or through specialist sites. We link to the booking page we checked for each one.

“From” rates were seen on the linked booking pages in October 2026 and vary by date. Trioffe may earn a commission on bookings made through links on this page; selections are editorial.
