The Gilis are three small islands off Lombok with no cars, no scooters and no hotel bigger than a village — which should make them boutique heaven. In practice the big names on Gili Trawangan run to 150 rooms, and the genuinely small places are easy to miss among the dive-shop bungalows. We went island by island and picked the eight small stays we’d actually book: private-pool villas on Trawangan and Air, a five-room design house, and two adults-only hideaways on Meno. If you’re still choosing an island, start with our guide to which Gili is right for you.

Gili Trawangan

The biggest, busiest island: the party strip on the east, the sunset swings on the west, and quiet lanes inland where the small villas hide.

Gili Treehouses

Jalan Kelapa, Gili T, quiet side, a minute from the beach · 4 villas · from ~US$53 low season, 80–150 in high · guest score 9.6

Four stilted timber villas built in 2017 — one- and two-bedroom — each with its own pool and separate living and dining spaces. The most private address on Trawangan at a fraction of the price of the famous estates.

Why we like it: a private pool villa for less than a mid-range hotel room; staff score 9.8.
Worth knowing: semi-open design means insects; Wi-Fi can drop; the office isn’t always staffed; IDR 500,000 nightly deposit and 3 % card fee.

Les Villas Ottalia

Jalan Ikan Kotak, Gili T, 10–13 minutes’ walk from the strip · 31 bungalows and villas · roughly US$60–120

Colonial-style eco-bungalows and villas around a pool with cabanas, some with their own plunge pools, a spa, free bicycles and hot breakfast. The point is sleeping far from the bars.

Why we like it: quiet, good value, bikes to the beach.
Worth knowing: reviews are mixed on upkeep and the kitchen; slow Wi-Fi and power cuts; unlit gravel paths; the mosque next door is loud at dawn; cards or PayPal only.

If you want the splurge: Pondok Santi, the coconut-plantation estate on the south of the island, is covered in our Gili guide. The west-coast “sunset” resorts — Ombak Sunset (152 rooms), Aston (125), Vila Ombak (148) — are fine resorts but not boutiques.

Gili Air

The middle island in every sense: a village, a reef, a few bars, and enough quiet that couples who find Trawangan loud and Meno empty end up here.

Anahata Tropical Private Villas

inland Gili Air · a handful of villas · from ~US$130 · guest score 9.6

One-bedroom villas and a two-bedroom family villa, each with its own pool, plus a shared pool, cooked breakfast and bicycles. Service scores a perfect ten.

Why we like it: a private pool with breakfast for the price of a resort room on Bali.
Worth knowing: thin walls; weak air-con in humid weather; the mosque is close (earplugs provided); check-in only 2–5 pm; not on the sea.

KeRensia Private Pool Villas

centre of Gili Air · villas from 40 to 120 m² · from ~US$86 · guest score 8.8

Four villa sizes — the family one has two bedrooms over 120 m² — each with a plunge pool and rain shower, breakfast included, and a location guests score ten out of ten.

Why we like it: space and a pool for under US$100.
Worth knowing: humidity has aged the woodwork; slow restaurant; dated furniture; the 4.30 am call to prayer. Reviewers suggest one or two nights.

Musa Villas and Bungalows

quiet side of Gili Air, 1.7 km from the jetty · 5 rooms and lofts · roughly US$70–130 · guest score 8.8 from 230 reviews

Five design rooms and lofts — including a two-bedroom family loft for five — around a pool, with free breakfast, massages, memory-foam beds and 100 Mb/s Wi-Fi. The only true five-key boutique on the islands.

Why we like it: real boutique scale; family configurations; fast internet.
Worth knowing: reception 8 am–10 pm; a 19-minute walk from the harbour; confirm rates for your dates.

Turtles are resident on the reefs off all three islands.

Gili Meno

The smallest and quietest: a salt lake in the middle, turtles off the east coast, and almost nothing to do after dinner — which is the attraction.

Gili Meno Escape (adults only)

a short cycle from the harbour · 6–10 rooms · from ~US$159

A minimalist white-and-teal B&B around a pool, rooms with balconies over the water, à la carte breakfast by the pool, bikes, snorkel gear, transfers and massages. Over-12s only.

Why we like it: the calmest, most contemporary address on Meno.
Worth knowing: no dinner service; few independent reviews yet.

Seri Resort Gili Meno (adults only)

east coast, 7 minutes from the turtle sanctuary · bungalows and sea-view rooms · guest score 8.6

Beachfront bungalows and sea-view rooms on Meno’s calm eastern shore, a beach bar and a rooftop bar, adults only.

Why we like it: the beach is at the door, and the sea in front is the one with the turtles.
Worth knowing: housekeeping is the recurring complaint in older reviews; check recent ones and rates for your dates.

Also on Meno: Le Pirate Gili Meno — 34 “beach boxes”, two pools, adults only, opened 2022 — and Sunset House (11 rooms, west-coast beachfront) are the other small names worth a look. Karma Reef’s safari tents were listed as closed on several booking sites at the time of writing; confirm directly before relying on it.

Getting there and around

There are no motor vehicles: you arrive by boat and move by bicycle or cidomo horse-cart. From Lombok airport, it is about 90 minutes by car to Bangsal harbour (a Grab is around IDR 580,000) and a short public or private boat; from Bali, fast boats from Padang Bai take about 90 minutes. Hotel-arranged airport transfers run about IDR 600,000 per person each way. On all three islands the mosques broadcast the call to prayer around 4.30–5.30 am; several hotels provide earplugs, and a room on the far side of the island helps.

Frequently asked questions

Which Gili is best for couples?

Gili Air for a balance of calm and a few good restaurants; Gili Meno if you want nobody around. Our island comparison goes deeper.

Are there private-pool villas on the Gilis?

Yes — Gili Treehouses on Trawangan and Anahata and KeRensia on Air all have them, from under US$100 in low season.

Can I visit all three in one trip?

Easily: island-hopping boats run between them in minutes. Two nights on each is the classic week.
