Labuan Bajo is a fishing port on the western tip of Flores that happens to be the gateway to Komodo National Park — dragons, the Padar viewpoint, Pink Beach and some of the best manta diving in Indonesia. Where you sleep decides your mornings: a 5 am speedboat to Padar is painless from the harbour, a taxi ride from the resort bays, and simply where you already are on a liveaboard. Here’s how the areas work and the hotels we’d book in each, with the 2026 park rules that now shape every trip.

The areas, explained

Town and harbour (Jl. Soekarno Hatta) is lively and practical: boats, dive shops, cafés and the harbour sunset, all on foot. It’s also noisy — bars, boat engines, the mosque at dawn — and there’s no beach. Best for divers, backpackers and anyone with a dawn departure. The hillside above the port trades walkability for panoramas: infinity pools, sunset terraces, taxis needed for everything. Waecicu and the northern bays are resort territory (AYANA, Plataran): private jetties, full service, boats from the hotel pier, but little to do outside and small, rarely swimmable beaches. Pede Beach and the south coast (Sudamala, Ta’aktana) sit between the airport and town — five minutes from the runway, calm, and newer. Island resorts (Seraya Kecil, Sebayur) mean a house reef at the foot of your bungalow and weak Wi-Fi. And liveaboards put you inside the park: sunrise on Padar, the port fee paid once, the far sites reachable — if you don’t get seasick.

One correction to older guides: the Kanawa Island resort has closed, so the island is a day-trip snorkel stop now, not a place to stay.

Where to stay in Labuan Bajo: our picks

Seaesta Komodo Hostel & Hotel — best budget, by the harbour

Town, 3 min from the port · 2 dorms and 3 private rooms · from about US$38

A social hostel-hotel with a rooftop pool and bar, scoring 9.2 from 80 Expedia reviews with 9.6 for cleanliness. Rooms are small and windowless, weekends bring live music, and there’s no lift — but for dawn boats and dive shops on foot it’s unbeatable at the price.

Who it suits: solo travellers, divers, anyone on a short pre- or post-liveaboard stop.

Escape Bajo — best cheap view

Hillside above town · dorms and sea-view rooms · roughly US$40–115

An adults-only spot a few minutes’ walk uphill with a restaurant and rooms pointed straight at the sunset. Expect the climb back after dinner. We couldn’t verify room count or an aggregate score, so read recent reviews before booking.

Who it suits: couples on a budget and remote workers.

Meruorah Komodo — best for a dawn departure in comfort

Marina · 145 rooms, 32–44 m² · from about US$215

Right on the marina, so your boat is a walk away, with a rooftop infinity pool, a kids’ pool and 8.8 from more than 600 reviews. It is a big hotel: check-in can be slow, housekeeping uneven, and the mosque and boats wake early sleepers. A 2.5 million IDR deposit is taken at check-in.

Who it suits: travellers who want full-hotel comfort without leaving the harbour.

Loccal Collection Hotel Komodo — best sunset pool

Hillside, 15 min walk from the port · about 96 rooms · from about US$255

An infinity pool and rooftop terraces built for the sunset, a spa and a 9.0 from 250 reviews. The hill is steep enough that you’ll taxi down, there’s little around it, and guests report patchy hot water and cleaning, plus noise from weddings and construction.

Who it suits: couples who want the view at a mid-range price.

Bay in Komodo National Park

Sudamala Resort, Komodo — best near the airport

Pede Beach, 5 km from the airport · 84 rooms and pool villas, 45–112 m² · from about US$435

Beachfront with a beach bar, pool, spa and a free airport transfer, scoring 9.2 from nearly 300 reviews. The beach isn’t a swimming beach, mosquitoes come with the waterfront, and town is a short ride rather than a walk.

Who it suits: families and couples who want resort comfort with a five-minute transfer.
Check prices for Sudamala Resort →

Komodo Resort & Diving Club — best for divers

Sebayur Island, inside the park · 26 teak bungalows, 45–72 m² · from about US$136 per person sharing, diving and meals extra

A private beach, a house reef, a PADI centre teaching in five languages and two wooden dive boats, with home-style Italian-Indonesian cooking. Komodo’s currents make it a destination for experienced divers rather than beginners; visibility varies, cards only, and transfers need organising. You will not be bored or online.

Who it suits: certified divers and adventurous families.

The Seraya Resort Komodo — best private island

Seraya Kecil Island · 18 bungalows, refreshed 2024 · from about US$425

Private beach, infinity pool, free snorkelling, kayaks and paddleboards, and a free port shuttle on arrival and departure; Booking.com guests give it 9.4. Wi-Fi only at reception, weak mobile signal, and a captive restaurant that charges accordingly — the trade for a Robinson Crusoe week.

Who it suits: couples who want an island to themselves with comfort intact.
Check prices for The Seraya →

AYANA Komodo Waecicu Beach — best full-service resort

Waecicu Bay · 205 rooms and suites, 48–99 m² · from about US$400

The long jetty with its jetty bar, two pools, spa, gym and water sports make it the most complete resort in town, and 335 reviews average 9.5. The beach is small, the grounds are big, restaurants are pricey, and activities need booking in the app the day before. Nothing is walkable.

Who it suits: families and anyone who wants an international resort rather than a boutique.

Plataran Komodo and TA’AKTANA — the two Michelin Keys

The only two Labuan Bajo hotels awarded a Michelin Key in the 2026 selection. Plataran Komodo Resort & Spa (Waecicu, about 20 rooms and villas, from about US$675, 9.7/10) has calm water for snorkelling off its beach, a private jetty and the Atlantis on the Rock restaurant. TA’AKTANA, a Luxury Collection Resort (Wae Rana beach on the south coast, 70 rooms and villas, opened 2024, from about US$980, 9.4/10) adds private-pool villas, an exclusive beach, spa and kids’ club. Komodo National Park in 2026: fees, quota and tours

Komodo dragon on the beach
Dragons live on Komodo (Loh Liang) and Rinca (Loh Buaya); a ranger is mandatory.

The big change: since 1 April 2026 the park is capped at 1,000 visitors a day, announced by the Ministry of Forestry after a trial from January. Operators report that walk-in tickets are gone — your boat company pre-books through the SiORA app two to three days ahead with your passport, tickets are non-refundable, and July–October sells out months in advance. Book the tour before the hotel.

Fees for foreigners are quoted slightly differently by operators; budget around US$22–30 per person per day: park entry about IDR 250,000, conservation fee IDR 100,000, a port fee of IDR 25,000 per day (paid once on a liveaboard), a diving surcharge of IDR 25,000 and a mandatory ranger at IDR 150,000–200,000 per group of up to five. Drones cost IDR 2,000,000 a day.

Tour prices (excluding fees): a shared speedboat day trip covering Padar, Pink Beach, the dragons, Manta Point and Taka Makassar runs roughly US$40–170 depending on the boat, lunch included; a private speedboat US$200–350 for a half day, a private wooden boat US$300–600 a day. A three-day, two-night open-trip phinisi costs US$150–300 per person (Sora Phinisi from about US$265 with meals and snorkelling); private charters US$500–1,500+ a day; dive liveaboards US$200–500 per person per day.

Padar is about 800 stone steps, 20–45 minutes to the three-bay viewpoint, best at sunrise with a 5 am departure (60–90 minutes by speedboat). Pink Beach is on Komodo Island itself — the sand is pink from coral fragments — and was named the world’s most beautiful beach by Explore Worldwide in 2025. Rinca is two hours away with easy trails; Komodo three to four hours by slow boat and wilder.

Getting there and when to go

Komodo International Airport (LBJ) handled just over a million passengers in 2024. From Bali there are four to six flights a day (1 h 10–1 h 20; Garuda, Batik, Citilink, AirAsia, Super Air Jet), from Jakarta five or more (2 h 30–3 h), from Lombok a daily Wings Air hop (about 1 h). Scoot flies direct from Singapore twice a week and AirAsia from Kuala Lumpur twice a week (both around 3 h–3 h 40). Dry season runs April–October: calm seas, hiking, snorkelling. July–August is peak and dragon mating season, when they’re harder to spot. November–March brings rough seas and days when the harbourmaster closes the port entirely. April–June and September–October are the sweet spots — Padar is still green in April and May.

Frequently asked questions

Can you sleep inside Komodo National Park?

Only on a liveaboard or at a handful of island resorts such as Komodo Resort on Sebayur. Kanawa no longer has accommodation. All day trips leave from Labuan Bajo.

Do I have to book the park in advance?

Yes. With the 1,000-a-day cap since April 2026, your operator pre-books tickets with your passport details; there are effectively no walk-in tickets, and peak months fill months ahead.

How long is the flight from Bali?

About 1 h 10–1 h 20, with four to six departures a day. Singapore and Kuala Lumpur have direct flights twice a week.

Prices are indicative “from” rates seen on booking sites in late 2026 and change with season and availability; park fees are as published by local operators and should be confirmed with yours.
