Langkawi is bigger than it looks — forty-five kilometres from the ferry jetty at Kuah to the Datai in the north-west, with the airport, the main beach strip and the cable car all on different corners. Its hotels sort neatly by coast: the strip at Pantai Cenang, the quieter sand at Tengah, the private-beach resorts of Pantai Kok, the two secluded luxury bays in the north, the duty-free town, the rice-field interior and one private island. This guide covers each, with who it suits, what it costs, how far from the airport and the hotels we’d book. For the small hotels in detail, see our best boutique hotels in Langkawi.

Frequently asked questions

Cenang or the north?

Cenang if you want to walk to dinner and don’t mind crowds; Datai Bay or Tanjung Rhu if you want to see nobody and are happy to eat at the resort.

How many nights?

Four is comfortable: the SkyBridge, a mangrove tour, an island-hopping boat and a day of nothing on the beach.

Can I get to Langkawi from Penang by sea?

Not in 2026 — the ferry has not resumed since the pandemic. Fly (40 minutes) or take a bus to Kuala Perlis and the ferry from there.
