Lombok is what Bali was before the traffic: white-sand bays with nobody on them, surf you can learn on, and a boutique-hotel scene that has grown up fast around Kuta, Selong Belanak and Senggigi. We analyse hotel and villa projects on this island for a living, so this list is built on what we see on the ground — location, build quality, rates and how properties actually perform — not on press trips.
Quick picks
- Best overall: Somewhere Lombok, Are Guling — design villas with private pools above an empty bay
- Best for surfers: Dome Lombok, Gerupuk — earth domes overlooking the surf bay
- Best value in Kuta: El Tropico Boutique Hotel — walk to everything
- Best for families: Sempiak Villas, Selong Belanak — direct beach access on the calmest bay
- Best for honeymoons: Jeeva Klui, Senggigi — beachfront, spa and sunsets over Bali

Which part of Lombok should you stay in?
Kuta Lombok (south) is the hub: surf schools, cafés, the only coworking spaces and most of the island’s new boutique hotels, 25–30 minutes from the airport. Selong Belanak, 20 minutes west, is a shallow, gentle bay — the island’s best beginner wave and the obvious choice with children. Gerupuk, 15 minutes east, is a fishing village turned surf outpost where boats run you to the breaks. Senggigi and Mangsit on the west coast are the classic resort strip: calmer, older, an hour-plus from the airport, with sunsets over Bali and the Gili Islands a short boat ride away.
1. Somewhere Lombok — best overall
Are Guling Bay, 15 min from Kuta · 20 villas with private plunge pools · from about US$165 including breakfast; expect US$250–350 in high season
A Design Hotels member and Michelin Guide listing on a hillside above Are Guling, between Mawun and Kuta. Twenty identical 51 m² villas, each with its own plunge pool, step down towards a long saltwater infinity pool that frames the bay. The restaurant does a fusion menu, a weekly barbecue and a 4–6 pm happy hour; rainwater is harvested and the whole place runs on an eco brief. Guests score it 9.8/10. Know before you book: the stairs are steep, nothing is within walking distance (there is a Kuta shuttle five times a day), the access road is rough and not every villa has a sea view — ask. Children under 12 are not accepted.
Who it suits: couples and honeymooners who want design and silence, and surfers heading for Are Guling.

2. Dome Lombok — best for surfers
Bumbang hill above Gerupuk Bay · 9 earth domes · from about US$70
Gerupuk has almost nothing but surf camps and homestays, which is exactly why Dome stands out: nine earthbag-and-adobe domes on the hill, a pool that looks across the bay to Mount Rinjani, a farm-to-table restaurant and breakfast included. You’re ten minutes from the boats, so you can surf Gerupuk’s breaks at dawn before the camps arrive. It’s young (opened 2022, only a handful of reviews so far), the walk up is steep, rooms are minimal — no TV, little storage — and the pool attracts insects at dusk.
Who it suits: surfers, eco-design fans and couples who like the unusual.

3. El Tropico Boutique Hotel — best value in Kuta
Central Kuta Lombok · 27 rooms, suites and plunge-pool villas · around US$65–75, higher in July–August
The pick if you want to leave the scooter at home: bars, cafés and surf shops are a few minutes’ walk, the beach under 15. Several pools including an adults-only one, a pool bar, and an à-la-carte breakfast that guests rate highly; scores run 9.4 on Booking.com and 9.8 on Hotels.com. The one consistent complaint is the dawn call to prayer from a nearby mosque — bring earplugs — and some building noise as Kuta keeps growing.
Who it suits: couples and remote workers who want Kuta’s social scene on foot.

4. Origin Lombok — best for surf and wellness
Sukadana, 2 km from Kuta Beach · 33 rooms and suites · from about US$55–85
Two pools and a pool lounge with a happy hour, a yoga pavilion, a spa, surf lessons and fishing trips, all in quiet gardens a short ride from town. The Hungry Bird restaurant is a favourite, and the family suites make it one of the few boutique options in Kuta that works with kids. It’s out of the centre, so you’ll want a scooter, and breakfast is the weak spot in the reviews.
Who it suits: surfers, yoga travellers and families who want space.

5. Sempiak Villas — best for families
Sempiak Hill, Selong Belanak · 14 villas and holiday homes · from about US$67; private-pool villas considerably more
Locally owned villas on the hill above Selong Belanak, with something rare on Lombok: direct beach access through a guests-only beach club, plus a beach restaurant, surfboards and bodyboards for the gentle waves, a spa and a yoga deck in the trees. The bay is shallow and calm, which is why it’s the island’s beginner surf spot and the best beach for small children. The hill is steep, pools aren’t fenced, and Selong Belanak goes quiet after dark — have a car or scooter for evenings in Kuta.
Who it suits: families with teens, beginner surfers, couples who want the beach at the bottom of the steps.

6. Seven Havens Residence — best view
Hillside above Selong Belanak · 5 suites and a 3-bedroom villa · from about US$65–80
A modernist mix of shipping containers and bamboo with one of the best infinity pools on the island: ocean, rice fields and mountains in a single sweep, and a sunrise guests keep photographing. Suites run from 38 to 71 m², the villa has its own pool, and a free shuttle covers the 1.3 km to the beach. Scores are 9.6/10. The access road is rough and steep, some furniture is dated and maintenance is uneven — this is a view-first choice.
Who it suits: couples arriving from Bali who want quiet and a panorama.

7. Jeeva Klui — best for honeymoons
Klui Beach, 5 min north of Senggigi · 35 suites and villas · from about US$95–135; pool villas US$200+
The only property on its bay: thatched suites and pool villas, a wide infinity pool facing the Gili Islands, a 180-metre private beach that’s good for snorkelling and the Jeevaniya spa, four open-air rooms right on the sand. Audley rates it First Class; guests give it 9.6/10 from more than 200 reviews. The sand is dark, you’ll need a taxi or scooter to go anywhere, and a few reviewers mention rooms due a refresh. Airport transfer is a little over an hour.
Who it suits: honeymooners, spa and beach couples, anyone combining Lombok with the Gilis.

8. Qunci Villas — best resort on the west coast
Mangsit Beach, Senggigi · 78 rooms, suites and 1–3-bedroom pool villas · from about US$150; villas US$300+
Bigger than the rest of this list but still design-led and unpretentious: three pools including an adults-only infinity pool, three well-regarded restaurants, a spa and a sunset beach that looks straight at Bali. It scores 9.6/10 across more than 500 reviews, and the multi-bedroom villas make it the strongest option for groups and families on this coast. Expect the morning call to prayer from the mosque nearby, and a few rooms showing their age.
Who it suits: groups, families in a villa, and couples who want full resort service.

When to go and how to get around
Dry season runs April to October; July and August are the driest and busiest, and Christmas–New Year adds roughly 40% to room rates. Late May to June and September are the sweet spots for weather and price. Surf is best March to September, though Gerupuk works all year. Mount Rinjani closes to trekkers from January to March. From Lombok International Airport, Kuta and Gerupuk are 25–30 minutes, Selong Belanak about 45 minutes and Senggigi a little over an hour; a private driver costs around IDR 200,000–250,000 (US$13–16). Ride-hailing apps work in Mataram and at the airport but are unreliable in the south, so plan on a scooter (US$5–8 a day) or a driver.
Frequently asked questions
Which area of Lombok is best for a first visit?
Kuta Lombok, for the choice of hotels, cafés and beaches within a short ride. Pick Selong Belanak if you’re travelling with children or learning to surf, and Senggigi if you want a classic beach resort and easy boats to the Gilis.
Is Lombok cheaper than Bali?
Yes, by roughly 15–25% for comparable hotels and food. A decent boutique room is US$60–80, a beachfront four-star around US$100. The Gili Islands are the exception — prices there are close to Bali’s.
Do I need a scooter?
Only central Kuta is walkable. Everywhere else — Selong Belanak, Gerupuk, Are Guling, Senggigi — assume a scooter or a driver, especially in the evening.
What’s the best time of year?
Late May to June, or September: dry, warm, good surf and lower rates than the July–August peak.
