Uluwatu is not a town. It is a loop of hamlets strung along the limestone cliffs of the Bukit peninsula — Bingin, Padang Padang, Balangan, Suluban, Ungasan — each with its own beach, its own surf break and its own idea of what a hotel should be. That geography is why the best places to stay here are small: cliff villas, eco-bungalows, a ten-room wellness retreat in century-old Javanese houses. Here are the eight we’d book, from a hundred dollars a night to four hundred, and the neighbourhood logic you need before you choose.

Uluwatu cliffs and surf, Bali
The Bukit cliffs: every hamlet has its own beach and its own wave.

Which hamlet?

  • Padang Padang / Labuan Sait: the liveliest and most walkable — cafés, restaurants, a swimmable beach. First visit without a vehicle; busy main road.
  • Bingin: surf village with pedestrian lanes, community cafés and a steep stair to the beach. Note that 48 cliff-side warungs and homestays were demolished in July 2025; the beach is open but access is basic until the rebuild, whose first phase (stairs and facilities) is due in 2026.
  • Suluban / Uluwatu cliffs: the legendary wave, Single Fin sunsets, cliff bars. Experienced surfers and night owls; beach access through the cave at low tide.
  • Balangan: the quietest, a long beach with local warungs and a west-facing sunset. Vehicle needed.
  • Pecatu centre: practical and central, near the temple; check for construction noise before booking.
  • Ungasan / Melasti: residential inland, luxury resorts and beach clubs on the southern cliffs. For staying put at a five-star.

Budget and mid-range

White Palm Hotel

Balangan · 9 rooms · from ~US$100 · guest score 8.6

A nine-room eco-boutique built around the idea of recovery: a saltwater pool, a “Recovery Lab” with light therapy and compression boots, no programme imposed, and Balangan beach two minutes on foot. Official rates start at IDR 1.8 million with breakfast.

Why we like it: quiet, close to a good surf beach, cheapest on the list.
Worth knowing: mixed reviews on mosquitoes, upkeep and nearby building work; breakfast is extra via agencies; closed on Nyepi.

Why we like it: the best-reviewed small hotel in Uluwatu, and the Bingin community on foot.
Worth knowing: not on the sea; some dark rooms and noise between them; breakfast not always included.

Why we like it: calm, fast internet, breakfast in the price: a remote-worker’s Uluwatu.

If you want bigger

Hidden Hills Villas (Pecatu, Small Luxury Hotels) from about US$325 a villa, though the owner acknowledges nearby construction noise. Alila Villas Uluwatu (Ungasan) — 64 private-pool villas from about US$760, a 9.3 score and the Bukit’s design benchmark; not boutique by size, but the reference. The two MICHELIN-Keyed resorts here, Bvlgari and Jumeirah, are grand hotels rather than boutiques.

Practical notes

Airport: about 20 km; 30–45 minutes normally, over an hour through Kuta and Jimbaran at rush hour. Grab or Gojek cars cost IDR 200,000–300,000; Bluebird taxis more but reliable. Getting around: scooters about IDR 100,000 a day; avoid crossing the peninsula several times a day, and expect the Labuan Sait corridor to jam. Surf seasons: April to October brings the south-east trades and offshore winds; June to August the biggest swells and crowds; April–June and September are the sweet spot. Padang Padang’s tube works from June for experts; Bingin from April; Impossibles from May; Green Bowl is the wet-season beginner option. Nyepi closes the airport for 24 hours each March or April — no check-ins or check-outs that day.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stay in Uluwatu without a scooter?

Only in Padang Padang / Labuan Sait, where cafés and the beach are on foot. Everywhere else, rent one or hire a driver.

Is Bingin still worth it after the demolition?

Yes for the village and the wave; the cliff-side warungs and homestays are gone and beach access is rudimentary until the rebuild. Stay up top (Mule Malu, Mû) rather than expecting beachfront.

How many nights?

Two to four. Uluwatu is a place to settle, not a stop.
