Nusa Lembongan is the island Bali used to be: thirty minutes by fast boat from Sanur, four kilometres wide, no traffic lights, three world-class surf breaks and a handful of hotels small enough to know your name by the second morning. It also has no large resorts at all, which makes it the easiest place in the region to find a real boutique stay. Here are the seven we’d book, by neighbourhood, plus two cheap and cheerful options across the Yellow Bridge on Nusa Ceningan.

First, pick your side of the island
- Jungut Batu (north-west): the main beach and village, warungs, surf schools, scooter rental, most fast-boat arrivals, sunset views of Mount Agung. Everything on foot, closest to the surf at Shipwrecks, Lacerations and Playgrounds; also the busiest corner.
- Mushroom Bay (west): a calm turquoise bay with white sand, beach cafés and massages — the best swimming beach all year, so also the busiest with day-trip boats.
- Dream Beach and Sandy Bay (south-west): cliffs, villas, sunsets, Devil’s Tear next door. Quiet and intimate, but currents make swimming dangerous and you’ll need a scooter to eat out.
- Coconut and Tamarind beaches: the waterfront between Jungut Batu and Mushroom Bay — quieter, cheaper, Secret Beach on foot.
- Nusa Ceningan, over the Yellow Bridge: sleepy, cheap, Blue Lagoon and cliff-jumping, channel views; few sandy beaches.
Jungut Batu
Batu Karang Lembongan Resort & Day Spa
Jungut Batu, on the cliff · villas and suites · from ~US$258 · guest score 9.1
The island’s grande dame: an eco-minded boutique resort stacked up the hillside above the bay with three pools, a gym, a spa, three restaurants and bars (including a whisky bar) and a hydroponic garden feeding the kitchen. The view across the strait to Mount Agung is the one on every Lembongan postcard.
Why we like it: the view, the breakfasts and the service; direct-booking deals such as stay four, pay three.
Worth knowing: no room service — it is a boutique, not a chain — and 10 am check-out.
The Tamarind Resort
Jungut Batu, two minutes from the beach · 12 suites and 3 villas · around US$230
Three two- and three-bedroom villas opening onto the upper infinity pool, twelve suites below, a kids’ pool, a restaurant, a gym and a day spa. It behaves like a resort but is sized like a boutique, which is why both families and couples keep coming back.
Why we like it: reliable Wi-Fi, two infinity pools, views to Bali.
Worth knowing: book through an agency — the hotel has no working official site of its own.
Indiana Kenanga Luxury Boutique Villas & Spa
Jungut Batu beachfront, facing Shipwrecks · 18 villas · around US$125–130
Built by two French designers in 2009: sixteen one-bedroom villas and two two-bedroom villas with private pools, two pools including a saltwater one, a spa, a French restaurant and — yes — a crêperie, right on the beach opposite the surf break.
Why we like it: the Franco-Balinese design and the beachfront position.
Worth knowing: breakfast is not included and gets mixed reviews; thin walls; no mosquito nets; reception is not 24-hour.
Ohana’s Beachfront Resort & Beach Club
Jungut Batu beach · 23 rooms · from ~US$145 · guest score 9.2
A Mediterranean-styled four-star over two floors with two pools (one for children), a beach club and a beach bar, straight onto the sand. Tempur mattresses and a kitchen guests rate highly.
Why we like it: direct sea access and the best beds on the island.
Worth knowing: food and drink are pricey; the beach club brings noise and crowds; check-in only 2–8 pm.
Mushroom Bay
Hai Tide Beach Resort
Mushroom Bay, 120 m from the beach · 24 lumbung huts · from ~US$145 · guest score 9.2
Twenty-four air-conditioned lumbung — the traditional thatched rice-barn huts — around a pool, with two restaurants and a PADI dive centre on site. The bay is the island’s best swimming beach.
Why we like it: immediate beach access, excellent breakfasts, diving from the door.
Worth knowing: the huts are small — one reviewer couldn’t open a suitcase.

Dream Beach and Sandy Bay
Dream Beach Huts
Dream Beach · 21 huts · from ~US$65 · guest score 8.6 from 2,800 reviews
Twenty-one air-conditioned huts and an infinity pool perched above Dream Beach. Guests rate the setting first and the friendly team second; the price makes it the best-value sunset on Lembongan.
Why we like it: location, view and price.
Worth knowing: outdoor bathrooms are no fun in the rain; day-trippers fill the pool area by mid-morning; swimming at Dream Beach is dangerous.
The Shacks at Sandy Bay
Sandy Bay, one minute from the beach · 2 units · from ~US$113
Two rooms — a deluxe and a king villa with a private pool — a spa and a pool, next door to the Sandy Bay Beach Club. The smallest hotel on this list and the one to pick for total quiet.
Why we like it: sunset, privacy, and the beach club for dinner.
Worth knowing: no reception, a deposit by bank transfer within 24 hours, closed at Nyepi, scooter essential.
Across the bridge: Nusa Ceningan
Le Pirate Beach Club Nusa Ceningan (adults only, 16+): ten white-and-turquoise “beach boxes”, a pool and a restaurant from about US$31 a night, with a 9.0 score from 850 reviews. The boxes are tiny (3 × 2 m), the pool is often full and the dogs and roosters are loud — but for the money and the photos it works. Check prices →
Nusa Veranda Sunset Villas: six room types, two pools, a spa and breakfast included from about US$50; too few reviews yet to judge. Check prices →
Getting there and around
Fast boats leave Sanur for Jungut Batu or Mushroom Bay roughly every hour from early morning, take about 30 minutes and cost US$15–22 one way with operators such as Rocky, Scoot, Marlin and The Tanis; book online, arrive 30–45 minutes early, and travel in the morning when the sea is calmer. Public boats from Sanur or Padang Bai take about 90 minutes and cost less. Lembongan to Nusa Penida is a 15-minute hop for US$3–6. On the island, scooters cost IDR 70,000–100,000 a day, golf buggies about IDR 500,000, bicycles IDR 50,000; nothing is more than 20 minutes away, the roads are potholed and there are no pavements. The Yellow Bridge to Ceningan is for pedestrians and two-wheelers only, rebuilt in 2017 after the old wooden bridge collapsed in 2016.
When to go
April to October is dry and the surf is most consistent, peaking in July and August (book early). December to March brings rain, unpredictable seas and cancelled snorkel trips. Manta rays are around Nusa Penida all year, and mola-mola appear at Crystal Bay from July to October, when the water drops to 20–26 °C — bring a wetsuit.
Frequently asked questions
Is Nusa Lembongan worth staying overnight?
Yes — day-trippers leave by late afternoon and the island becomes a different place. Two or three nights is the sweet spot, with a day trip to Penida for the cliffs and mantas.
Which beach can you swim at?
Mushroom Bay is safe year-round. Dream Beach and Sandy Bay have strong currents; treat them as sunset viewpoints, not swimming spots.
Do I need a scooter?
In Jungut Batu and Mushroom Bay, no. At Dream Beach, Sandy Bay or Ceningan, yes — or budget for a buggy.
