Bali and Lombok sit 35 km apart across a strait, and the numbers tell you most of what you need to know: Bali welcomed about 6.9 million foreign visitors in 2025; Lombok, around 430,000 the year before. One island has the restaurants, the beach clubs, the direct flights and the crowds. The other has empty white-sand bays, a volcano you can climb and a surf break pros fly in for — and a rougher edge. We work on hotel and villa projects on both, so here is the honest comparison.
The short answer
- Choose Bali for variety: food, nightlife, wellness, luxury hotels, easy logistics, families with small children.
- Choose Lombok for space: quieter beaches, lower prices, serious surf, trekking Rinjani, and the Gili Islands next door.
- Do both if you have ten days: fly into Bali, fast-boat or hop a 45-minute flight to Lombok, finish on the Gilis.
Side by side
| Bali | Lombok | |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign visitors | ~6.9 million (2025) | ~430,000 (2024) |
| Getting there | Ngurah Rai (DPS): 60 airlines, ~43 international routes | Lombok International (LOP): 10 airlines; international flights from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur only |
| Beaches | Famous, busy; much of the east coast is black sand | White-sand bays (Tanjung Aan, Selong Belanak, Mawun), often empty |
| Surf | Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Canggu, Keramas; best infrastructure and schools | Desert Point (world-class left), Gerupuk, Ekas, Mawi; Selong Belanak for beginners; empty line-ups |
| Nightlife | Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Uluwatu | Almost none on the mainland (Muslim-majority island); Gili Trawangan is the exception |
| Food | Everything from warungs to fine dining; wine and pork easy | Excellent local food (ayam taliwang); few high-end restaurants; pork hard to find |
| Mid-range daily budget | US$70–150 | US$70–120 |
| 3-star hotel | Market average rate around IDR 2.4 million | US$35–65 a night |
| Hotel occupancy | 73% (2025) | 56% (2024) |
| Getting around | Scooter US$5–7/day; Grab and Gojek everywhere | Scooter US$5–8/day; ride-hailing works in Mataram and at the airport, unreliable in the south |
| Tourist levy | IDR 150,000 per foreign visitor, paid online | None |

Beaches and surf
Lombok wins the beach contest, and even Bali’s own beach-club blogs admit it: the south coast around Kuta Lombok is a string of white-sand bays — Tanjung Aan, Selong Belanak, Mawun — where you can still have the sand to yourself. Bali’s famous beaches are busy and its east coast is mostly black volcanic sand, though Nusa Dua and Sanur are calm and easy with children.
Surf is a closer call. Bali has the schools, the rental shops and the range: Kuta Beach and Canggu for beginners, Medewi for longboarders, Uluwatu and Padang Padang for the experienced (April–October), Keramas on the east coast in the wet season. Lombok has fewer people in the water and two of Indonesia’s great waves: Desert Point, a 20-second-plus left that fires roughly May–August and is for experts only, and the boat-accessed breaks of Gerupuk bay, which work year-round. Selong Belanak is arguably the best beginner wave on either island.

Food, drink and nightlife
This is where Bali pulls ahead. Canggu, Seminyak and Uluwatu have the beach clubs, cocktail bars and restaurants; wine, craft beer and babi guling are all easy. Lombok is a Muslim-majority island with more than 8,000 mosques — expect the dawn call to prayer, drinking is low-key, and evenings outside Kuta Lombok and Senggigi are quiet. The local food is a genuine draw (ayam taliwang, plecing kangkung), but high-end dining is thin. If you want nightlife on the Lombok side, it lives on Gili Trawangan.
Prices
Lombok runs roughly 10–25% cheaper than Bali for comparable hotels, food and transport. A warung meal is US$1.50–2 on Lombok against US$2–5 in Bali; a casual restaurant US$8–15 a head against US$10–20; a decent three-star US$35–65 a night. The gap closes at the top end — Lombok’s luxury segment averaged around US$216 a night in 2024, while Bali’s Jimbaran–Uluwatu resorts average IDR 4.8 million and its luxury tier IDR 13 million — and it closes completely on the Gili Islands, which price like Bali.
Getting there and around
Bali is simply easier: dozens of airlines, direct long-haul flights, Grab and Gojek on every corner. Lombok’s international links are Singapore (Scoot, now ten flights a week) and Kuala Lumpur; everyone else connects through Bali or Jakarta. Between the islands, the flight is 45 minutes (around US$75–80 one way) and fast boats from Padang Bai reach Senggigi in about 1 h 15 and Gili Trawangan in 1 h 30, for roughly US$25–45 depending on operator. On Lombok, plan on a scooter or a private driver — a transfer from the airport to Kuta or Senggigi costs around US$13–30 — because ride-hailing is hit and miss outside Mataram.
Weather
Both islands share a dry season (Bali April–September, Lombok May–September) and a wet season from roughly October–November to March; Lombok gets noticeably less rain in the wet months. Bali’s wettest month is January, its driest August. On Lombok, Desert Point and Mawi fire May–August, Rinjani closes January–March, and the MotoGP at Mandalika (October) pushes Kuta Lombok prices up.
Safety and health
The same warnings apply to both: methanol-laced spirits (one shot can be fatal — buy sealed drinks from reputable bars), rip currents at popular beaches, scooter accidents, and active-volcano treks (Agung and Batur on Bali, Rinjani on Lombok). Dengue is present on both; rabies is a Bali concern because of its street dogs and temple monkeys — seek care immediately after any bite. Bali’s medical facilities are far better; on Lombok, serious cases are often flown to Bali. Lombok also has a visible litter problem on roads and some beaches.

Which island for which traveller
- Couples: Bali for Uluwatu, Seminyak or Ubud; Lombok for Mangsit’s boutique resorts or a silent Gili Meno.
- Families: Bali, for Sanur, Nusa Dua, waterparks and reliable doctors. Lombok works with older kids who snorkel and surf.
- Surfers: beginners either way (Kuta/Canggu vs Selong Belanak/Gerupuk); experts choose between Uluwatu and Desert Point.
- Digital nomads: Bali (Canggu) for coworking and internet; Lombok for a small scene in Kuta and rents around US$400 a month.
- Luxury: Bali, by a distance.
- Nightlife: Bali, or Gili Trawangan.
- Quiet, budget, trekking, non-drinkers: Lombok.
